How Did We Even Get Here?

I often think about the evolution that brought us to the rise of cloud solutions. We have been able to add value for everyday work in incremental ways. Cloud solutions are meant to be so modern that they can adapt as the organization grows and increases adoption.

Computing in the 1990s was filled with multiple fragmented applications and landscapes that sometimes did not even integrate.  Outdated versions of software were stored everywhere.  The solutions were meant to solve only one problem at a time. Development was cumbersome.

Then, the 2000s brought additional niche solutions that created pseudo-horizontal environments. This custom code had to be developed without the advantage of a suitable cloud solution.  But customers had crazy dreams about how they could access their applications from anywhere and have concurrent users making dynamic updates!

Moving forward from 2020, the direction is horizontal business applications that will support an entire workflow from front to back office.  Industries will require speed and agility for  modernizing their core business solutions and a constant focus on acceleration with scarce resources, brought on by the pandemic.  Other forces working in the cloud will taunt innovation, such as cyber threats and regulatory requirements.

We are in the midst of the transition and transforming will be easier in the 2020s because of the advantages the cloud provides to the enterprise.

Stay tuned...
